Known for works such as Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, Dear John, and The Notebook, Nicholas Sparks is one of the world’s best writers of romance stories.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Nicholas is the middle of three children. Although he graduated with a business degree with honors in 1988, he decided to pursue writing after a remark made by his mother when he was nineteen. However, this was not an easy path. After graduation, Sparks tried to look for work in publishing and applied to several law schools, but both attempts failed. He jumped careers over the years, from real estate appraisal to manufacturing to telemarketing and, finally, to pharmaceutical sales.
In between jobs, Nicholas penned The Notebook. The novel was published in 1996 and made the New York Times Best Seller Week immediately. The Notebook was followed by more romantic dramas, such as Message in a Bottle (1998), A Walk to Remember (1999), Nights in Rodanthe (2002), Dear John (2006), The Last Song (2009), and The Longest Ride (2013). Many of his novels, including those mentioned above, have been adapted into films. Some of his most successful adaptations include A Walk to Remember and The Notebook.
Starring Mandy Moore and Shane West, A Walk to Remember tells the love story of two unlikely people: a rebellious teenager and a pastor’s daughter. The two start off as enemies, but slowly, a love flourishes between them. Unfortunately, their story does not get a happy ending.
The Notebook (2004) is the story of a young couple who fall in love in the ’40s. The story is told by an elderly man in a nursing home to an elderly woman in the same home. The movie starred Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams and is widely regarded as one of the greatest romantic films of all time. The story is proof that true love withstands the test of time.
Other than working on his novels, Nicholas also created Nicholas Sparks Productions in 2012. The studio produces films other than those based on his novels. He also founded the Nicholas Sparks Foundation, which aims to improve cultural and international understanding through global education.
Today, Nicholas continues to write. He lives in North Carolina with his family and supports a variety of local and national charities. His latest book, Two by Two, was published in October 2016.
